chocolate treat
by Noelle Paré

that tantalizing moment
of delayed gratification -

waiting for the
sip, suck, & swallow,

that creamy kiss,
of chocolate ice cream.

imagining the tongue & chocolate
locked in common pulsation

as if to enclose, emesh,
imprison, once & forever,

the odour & flavor
that eludes one's grasp.

until one is forced to
rouse at 3:00 a.m.

and quench the
chocolate fervor

at the local all-hours
supermarket -

the climax a tongue
against cream and

lips full of gooey
sticky evidence that

the act has
been consummated.

       nature defined
by Noelle Paré

I.
when i was a little girl, i watched
a bird die. it's wings battered and broken,
i watched as its body clung
to the window pane: the thing it had been
flung against. i watched its chest
heave in and out. it was marked by
claw marks from a cat's playing.

II.
the cat approached with
sharp teeth and beady eyes.
nature's way, my mom said.
the bird's eyes went deathly still
and its beaten body lay cold
upon the damp ground.

       for this was the land
by Noelle Paré

running his fingers down the hill that was my belly
he reached my naval and
stroked its perimeter
(as if he was searching for hidden treasures)
until his finger plunged inside
(like he was diving into the ocean floor)
feeling for the splendor of hidden skin
(soft skin – like a baby's).

his fingers stroked without change
leaving their scent on my skin
(that sweet and salty scent of familiarity).

some days, that memory stops me dead
and suddenly
your life sweeps behind me,
(just like a rumbling wind)

but when stillness ripples the air
(like in early morning when birds sing)

that memory (fleeting) of your
finger's imprint on my belly
is measured out endlessly
in my mind.
